Book Review - The Monocle Guide to Good Business
As we become busier, the luxury of sitting down for several hours to read isn’t always available to us. The Monocle Guide to Good Business is a book you can pick up and put down only after reading a couple pages at a time, or you can lose yourself for a few hours in the stories of business people around the world or ideas to make your store a more inviting place for your customers.
This book is more for the type of entrepreneur that wishes to build a small business, interact with their customers, sell well-crafted products or build a world-class enterprise and try and keep the ethos on which it was built. This is not for the pump-and-dump unicorn builder type of businessperson you’ll find in Silicon Valley or Wall Street.
Here's an excerpt from a section called "Ditch the MBA", Few in the 21st century have sought to tackle one of the most insidious modern oppressions of working life: that of shallow corporate managerial thinking. So much of the business world has adopted a studied, technocratic approach to management.” The book doesn’t want to say that the MBA is a waste of time, but without perspective, it can be more of a hindrance than a help to prospective entrepreneurs.
Part of the enjoyment of this book is the inspiration it can give to aspiring entrepreneurs as well as tips for existing business people. It is a coffee table book in the best sense and a reference guide to local businesses around the world. With a linen-wrapped cover and high quality paper, you get the impression that the book was crafted by people who care about detail. The passion for business is clearly evident.
Debbee Pezman, co-founder of The Surfer’s Journal says, “If there’s a subject that almost seduces an audience with passion for something they are interested in, there is no medium like print,” and goes on to say “Make something that is worth holding in your hand.”
Obviously, this is not a book you can buy in ebook form. For more insight into the book, check out the review at core77.com.
